Spectacular Sidhique Steals the Show in Mohan Kumar Fans - Malayalam Movie Review

Image
If you are looking for a feel good movie to lift your spirits amidst the covid pandemic, look no further than Jis Joy’s latest film, Mohan Kumar Fans. The film revolves around Mohan Kumar, a washed up movie star who is attempting a comeback after thirty years. The heart and soul of the film is undoubtedly, veteran actor Sidhique, who gives an incredible performance as Mohan Kumar.  Kunchako Boban plays the role of Krishnanunni, an aspiring singer as well as an ardent fan of Mohan Kumar, who comes into the lives of the actor and his daughter in the form of a driver. He connects with Mohan Kumar’s daughter, played by newcomer, Anarkali Nazar, as they are both aspiring singers competing together on a TV show.  Most of the laughs in this film come thanks to Vinay Fort, who shows off his comedic skills convincingly as an attention-seeking, full-of-himself young movie star. His antics like changing his name from Krupesh to Agosh Kumar because people were calling him by the nickname,...

Worst Hero Character in Malayalam Cinema - Meleparambil Aanveedu Film Review

Image
“Meleparambil Aanveedu” is a hugely popular movie from the 90s, and is still considered “one of the best comedy films” in Malayalam cinema. However, I have always found this movie to be cringe-worthy, particularly because of the unbelievably degrading treatment the heroine suffers at the hands of her “loving” husband. To this day, I’m surprised when women tell me how much they love this film.  The movie features an unbelievably cowardly “hero”, who I believe is possibly the worst hero character I have ever seen in a Malayalam film. However, movies are very powerful in the way they start conversations about issues prevalent in our society.  So I’m sharing my thoughts about “Meleparambil Aanveedu”, which I feel is pure misogyny disguised as a family entertainer, brought to audiences by director Rajasenan and the screenplay to this disgusting story is written by Raghunath Pa...

The Great Indian Kitchen Malayalam Film Review - A Lesson in Patriarchy and Poor Communication

Image
After reading many rave reviews and listening to umpteen discussions triggered by it, I finally watched the Malayalam film, “The Great Indian Kitchen”. The movie follows a young newly-wed couple as they embark on life together. The focus is on the bride who has to adjust to the different way things are done in her in-law’s home than her own. The primary takeaway of the film is that household chores, particularly cooking and cleaning, is the responsibility of women in Indian families, with no help from the opposite sex. And despite the year being 2021, I sadly have to admit that in most Indian families, this is still the way things are. Director Jeo Baby succeeds in demonstrating the drudgery and monotony of these chores by repeating the same scenes of chopping vegetables, making dosas, serving food, clearing up the table after a meal and cleaning the dishes, almost to the point of boring the viewer. In fact, these repetitive scenes constitute nearly half of the initial minutes of...
